House of Mercy residents have enjoyed getting out for the beautiful spring weather with Coordinator of Resident Recreation Billie Hutchison. They took a day trip to Marion, Black Mountain, Lake Lure and Chimney Rock to take in mountain views and walks along creeks and wooded trails. Residents and staff also made trips to the Lazy 5 Ranch, Kings Mountain, Daniel Stowe Park, Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Concord that included a resident's visit with his elderly mother. Youth from area churches volunteered at House of Mercy over spring break. Spring Breakout Camp participants spruced up the residence this spring by cleaning screens, patio furniture and bringing flowers. Students from Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School also visited House of Mercy, learning about our AIDS ministry and talking and playing games with residents.
House of Mercy appreciates community support of our 2010 Walk for AIDS on April 10th. Proceeds now total over $27,000 and will help provide care for House of Mercy residents. House of Mercy has been awarded grants from the Altrusa Club of Gaston County, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Dover Foundation, Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation, Howe Foundation, Keith Haring Fund, Jerry R. Licari Foundation, Regional HIV/AIDS Consortium, Sisters of Mercy of NC Foundation and St. Peter's Catholic Church. Students from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Salisbury contributed funds from a Dress Down Day fundraiser. Many thanks to the East Gaston High School Chorus, Faith Victory Ministry, Metropolitan Community Church of Charlotte, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church, Walls Memorial AME Zion Church, and the VFW of Mt. Holly for providing delicious meals for our residents.
In-kind contributions from the House of Mercy Wish List are much appreciated and help us keep expenses down in a tight economy. Thanks to Abbott Nutrition, First Baptist Church of Shelby, Food Lion, Jonesville AME Zion Church, Mocha Moms, New Spirit Circle of Covenant United Methodist Church, St. Maximilian Kolbe Fraternity, The Tradesmen, The Rainbow Inn, TOP Teens Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, UMW Square II of First United Methodist Church of Belmont, UNCC Social Work Masters Class, Westview Baptist Church, Young Adult Missionary Society of Greater Gethsemane AME Zion Church, and all who recently donated food and household items for our residents.,
