This fall, several House of Mercy residents and caregivers went to Kings Mountain and toured along the Blue Ridge Parkway to see the colorful views and walk in nature. Residents also enjoyed an afternoon at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. On November 12th The Spiritual & Grief Care Services group of Hospice & Palliative Care (Charlotte Region) provided a 'Blessing of the Hands' ceremony at House of Mercy. Hospice Chaplain Alison Rizk poured warm lavendar scented water over the hands of House of Mercy staff, volunteers and a resident. She honored our caregiving work with these words, "This Blessing of the Hands is to honor your work and provide nourishment. We are thankful for your gift of self. May the compassionate work of your hands bring comfort to all whom you touch."
Volunteers have been an important part of life at House of Mercy. The youth group from Assurance United Methodist Church cleaned the residence gutters and shed and also visited with residents. Volunteers of the Eastern Star helped decorate the residence for Christmas. MAC Cosmetics Employees enjoyed giving makeovers to two House of Mercy residents. Proceeds from VIVA Glam lipsticks (produced by MAC Cosmetics) help support the MAC AIDS Fund, which awards grants to nonprofit AIDS Organizations like House of Mercy. Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church members provided residents a delicious meal of pork roast and all the fixins'. A chicken dinner was also delivered from Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church and Faith Victory Ministry. Mt. Carmel Baptist Church provided lots of needed items from our Wish List and The Tradesmen and the Metropolitan Community Church of Charlotte provided dinners for House of Mercy residents. Members of the vocally talented One Voice Chorus sang Christmas carols for residents on December 14th.
House of Mercy has been awarded a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, the Hillsdale Fund and the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation. Donations have also been received from Bi-Lo Charities, Abbott Virology, The Prime Timers of Charlotte and Gaston County Health Department's World AIDS Day fundraiser.
The need for housing and specialized care for low-income persons living with AIDS continues as an estimated 33,000 people are now living with HIV or AIDS in North Carolina (including individuals who are unaware of their infection). House of Mercy is a nonprofit residence in Belmont, NC that provides compassionate, specialized care for low-income persons living with AIDS. Since its founding in 1991 by the Sisters of Mercy, over 260 men and women have made their home at House of Mercy.
